

Indeed I would just say that Carlos Ruiz Zafon is a master storyteller in general, but he is also one that needs time to polish and work his product. You see, Zafon is a master of prose, character, and theme. Unfortunately, it is very clear that Zafon was under time pressure from the publisher on this book, enough so that the story was irreversibly ruined. The second book The Angel's Game is well up there on my list, so when I saw The Prisoner of Heaven on display, I was ecstatic. Zafon's first book, The Shadow of the Wind is one of my all time favorites. This book is a perfect example of what is wrong with the publishing world. The bestselling author of The Shadow of the Wind takes us back to the shadowy streets of Barcelona and the world of the Sempere and Sons bookshop. This visit leads back to a story of imprisonment, betrayal and the return of a deadly rival. Then, to Daniel’s surprise, the man inscribes the book with the words ‘To Fermín Romero de Torres, who came back from the dead and who holds the key to the future’. Despite the fact that the stranger seems to care little for books, he wants to buy this expensive edition.
